Free AI help for Scottish businesses: a plain-English guide
The Scottish Government is funding free AI training, consultancy and grants for SMEs until March 2027. Most business owners have never heard of it. Here is what is on offer and how to get it.
There is public money on the table right now for Scottish businesses that want to start using artificial intelligence. Free training. Free hands-on help from actual data scientists. Grant support for AI projects. Most business owners we speak to have never heard of any of it.
So here is the plain-English version.
What the programme is
It is called the National AI Adoption Programme, run under the AI Scotland banner. The Scottish Government has put roughly £1 million into it, and it runs until 31 March 2027. It is delivered by four organisations you may already know: Scottish Enterprise, The Data Lab, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, and South of Scotland Enterprise.
The point of it is simple. Most Scottish SMEs have not started with AI, the government wants that to change, and it is paying to lower the barrier.
Who can get it
Small and medium-sized businesses and social enterprises based in Scotland. That covers the vast majority of firms in Stirling, Falkirk and across Central Scotland. It is free to apply, and you can apply at any time while the programme runs.
What is actually on offer
The Data Lab side of the programme is fully funded, which means free to you. At the time of writing it includes:
- Introduction to Data and AI for SME Leaders. A short course, about 16 hours, to get you genuinely confident about what AI can and cannot do.
- From Foundation to Implementation. The follow-on, for moving from curiosity to an actual plan.
- A Problem Definition Workshop. You bring a real business problem, they help you scope a proper project around it.
- Hands-on support from The Data Lab’s data science team to develop and test an AI solution for your business. This is the remarkable one: skilled people building with you, funded.
- The Scottish AI Adoption Network, a community for ongoing peer support and events.
On top of that, the enterprise agencies offer specialist consultancy to help you find and deliver AI opportunities, and there is grant support for AI projects for businesses that meet the criteria. One honest note on the grants: funding of this kind usually expects match funding, meaning you put in a share alongside the public money. Check the terms of whatever round is open when you apply.
How to get it
Start at aiscotland.scot or The Data Lab’s AI adoption page. You submit an enquiry and an adviser comes back to discuss what fits. That is it. No lengthy bid writing to get started.

This programme is genuinely worth your time, and we say that as a firm that sells AI help. The free training is a sensible first step for any owner who feels behind on this stuff, and funded data science support is not something that comes around often.
What the programme will not do is know your business. Courses teach the general case.
