What we collect, and why.
This is the whole of it, in plain English. Last updated 12 October 2026.
Who we are
This website is run by Swanswater Ltd, registered in Scotland, company number SC715583, based in Stirling. We are the data controller for the information described here. You can reach us at [email protected].
Analytics, and the choice you are asked to make
We use Clearview, the analytics platform run by Swanswater Technology Group (STG), our technology arm and a separate company, to understand how this site is used and where visitors come from. It only runs if you accept it on the banner. If you decline, or your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, nothing is stored and nothing is sent.
If you accept, Clearview records:
- The pages you visit, how long you stay, how far you scroll, and what you click, including where on the page you clicked, links to other sites, downloads, which calls to action you saw and used, and form starts and submissions (not what you type into them).
- On forms: which fields you spent time in and for how long, and whether you cleared a field, so we can see where forms are hard. Never the words you typed. Where a form is marked for it, the option you chose from a dropdown or tick box.
- Where you came from, both on your first visit and on this one: the referring site, any campaign tags in the address, and whether an AI assistant such as ChatGPT or Perplexity sent you.
- Whether you reached a confirmation page, and whether your browser blocks trackers (checked with a hidden element, not by contacting any advertising network).
- Your device and browser: screen size, language, time zone, connection type, and basic hardware details such as processor cores and memory.
- Page performance measurements, so we can keep the site fast.
- Errors the page hits, including the technical detail of where in our code they happened, repeated clicks on something that does not respond, and the last form field you were in if you leave a form unfinished.
- A random identifier for your device, a count of your visits, and the details of your first visit, so returning visits can be recognised. These are random strings, not your name.
Clearview does not record your name, email address or anything you type into a form. It does not use advertising networks and does not sell data.
Legal basis: your consent. You can withdraw it at any time from the analytics choices link in the footer of every page. Declining removes the Clearview identifiers from your device.
How long: Clearview keeps analytics data for 90 days, then deletes it. The identifiers on your device last until you decline or clear your browser, but once the server-side record is gone there is nothing for them to link to.
What is stored on your device
| Name | Type | What it does | Lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
_sw_consent | Local storage | Remembers whether you accepted or declined analytics, so we do not ask again. Strictly necessary, so it is set regardless. | One year |
_stg_vid, _stg_vc, _stg_ft | Local storage | Clearview: random device identifier, visit count, and first-visit details. Only if you accept. | Until you decline or clear your browser |
_stg_sid, _stg_px, _stg_sr, _stg_la, _stg_lt | Session storage | Clearview: a random session identifier, the number of pages in this visit, the site that referred you, when you were last active (a visit ends after 30 minutes idle), and how this visit arrived. Only if you accept. | Until you close the tab |
We set no advertising cookies and load no third-party scripts.
Forms you fill in
When you contact us, claim the new business offer, subscribe to the newsletter or send yourself a diagnostic result, we receive what you type: typically your name, email address, business name and message. We use it to reply to you and, where you have asked for it, to send you the newsletter. The legal basis is taking steps at your request before a contract, or your consent for the newsletter, which you can withdraw by replying to any issue.
Forms are delivered by Netlify, which hosts this site and processes submissions on our behalf. Netlify is based in the United States and relies on the UK's approved safeguards for international transfers. We keep enquiries for as long as we are dealing with them and then for up to two years in case you come back; newsletter subscriptions until you unsubscribe.
Who else sees your data
- STG (Swanswater Technology Group) operates Clearview and hosts the analytics data on our behalf, as our processor. STG does not use the data for any purpose of its own.
- Netlify hosts the site and handles form submissions as our processor.
- Nobody else, unless the law requires it.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you can ask for a copy of the data we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, object to our using it, or ask us to restrict it. Email [email protected] and we will respond within a month. If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk, though we would rather you told us first.
Changes
If we change what this site collects, we change this page in the same update and move the date at the top. We do not make silent changes.
